Cancer treatment in the clinics of Germany and Switzerland
Recent developments in diagnosis and treatment of cancer have made Germany and Switzerland absolute world leaders in this field. These countries have invested heavily in medical research of cancer. Famous Cancer Centers help thousands of patients from all over the world every year.
The fields of successful cancer treatment are following:
Treatment of benign tumors
Treatment of malignant tumors
Treatment of melanoma
Treatment of leukemia (including acute leukemia)
Treatment of breast cancer
Treatment of stomach cancer
Treatment of lung cancer
Treatment of bowel cancer (including cancer of the rectum and colon cancer)
Treatment of cervical cancer
Treatment of liver cancer
Treatment of kidney cancer, etc.
Cancer clinics in Germany and Switzerland offer the following methods of cancer treatment:
Surgical cancer treatment
Surgery is the most common method of cancer treatment. There are two types of surgical cancer treatment:
radical surgery, during which benign or malignant tumors are removed completely;
palliative surgery, during which the tumor is not removed completely, but in this case the patient's life is greatly facilitated. Further treatment of tumors may be carried out by therapeutic methods.
Many oncology hospitals propose to use plastic surgery and cosmetic surgeries to correct appearance defects after surgery in case of breast cancer treatment or skin tumors (melanoma).
Surgery fro metastases
Sometimes the disease is detected at a stage when there are already metastases in different organs (e.g. the lymph nodes and liver). Whereas before such patients could receive conservative treatment to lengthen their life expectancy, they have a good chance to become healthy people today. Liver metastases are treated particularly well. The method of radiofrequency ablation (the impact on the debride tissue by high temperature, as well as the method of cryosurgery (influence of low temperature) is applied in addition to the classical surgical cancer treatment. The key is not to lose hope and fight against disease. Modern world medicine is in the high because the impossible becomes possible.
Radiation therapy or radiotherapy is a procedure of x-ray radiation of tumors. Tumor cells die in this case, and cells of the body stay practically unharmed. Cancer treatment by use of radiation therapy in the clinics of Germany and Switzerland is normally carried out in conjunction with surgery and chemotherapy.
The radiation is carried out within several sessions by use of the most modern equipment. One session of radiation therapy lasts up to five minutes. Cancer treatment by use of radiation therapy is carried out during several weeks, however, may be shortened to five days using special techniques.
Chemotherapy means the use of medicaments to suppress tumor pathological processes. Doctors carry out this therapy by use of the most advanced products.
High-dose chemotherapy gives better results in comparison with standard chemotherapy and is used for treatment of patients. In some cases, high-dose chemotherapy is completed by autogenous refusion of blood cells. If necessary, chemotherapy is applied in combination with other methods of cancer treatment.
Hormonotherapy is the use of hormonal and antihormonal products. Hormonotherapy is used in treatment of breast cancer and prostate tumors.
Gamma Knife is a medical device working with the help of directional concentrated gamma radiation. Lars Leksell, a Swedish neurosurgeon, invented the device in 1950. The Gamma Knife makes it possible to treat vascular neoplasms and brain tumors including metastases without surgical intervention and long-term radiation exposure of the brain. Only one outpatient treatment is enough to defeat the disease.
Often the use of Gamma Knife is generally the only possible way to treat brain neoplasms. Microneurosurgical treatment makes it possible to get free of malignant brain tumors and malignant spinal cord tumors, etc. However, this method is limited to the size of the tumor, namely it should not exceed 3 cm. Active development of more powerful devices is currently conducted.
Immunotherapy is a method of cancer treatment and has got wide spread occurrence. The Oncology Center can also offer this treatment. The principle of the method is based on the specific immune evocation to certain proteins exposed on the surface of cancer cells only. The immune system does not distinguish cancer cells from normal ones because there are not any “external” differences between them. At the same time, the cancer tissue has a number of specific proteins not peculiar to the normal cells.
It is possible to stop the development of tumors and cause the death of cancer cells by producing antibodies to these proteins and introducing them into the blood-vascular channel (or giving the ability of the immune system to produce such antibodies). Immunotherapy based on the targeted delivery of a drug-killer to cancer cells by use of antibodies specific for this cancer is even more effective.
A fused protein consisting of a specific monoclonal antibody and protein-killer is made through genetic engineering manipulations. Such a fused protein is able to “recognize” the cancer cells, be connected with them and introduce a killer part into the cell killing it. Cancer gene therapy is based on giving the common body cells the ability to produce specific anticancer agents (e.g., the same antibodies).
Recent studies in the field of cancer have shown that the easier the cancer can be treated, the earlier the symptoms of the disease have been identified. According to European statistics, the treatment carried out as much as possible early allows in 80-85 cases of the 100 to extend the full life of patients.
Of course, such severe diseases as bone sarcoma and lymph cancer require a combination of surgical and therapeutic methods and long-term treatment. But the treatment of brain tumors and blood cancer can be successful if the metastatic processes and cancer are detected at early stages.
At first, leading experts and best laboratories in oncology clinics examine patients in order to treat cancer of the stomach, bowel or kidney. An individual therapy scheme is made and complex cancer treatment is carried out according to the results of the deep examination.
Today, medicine in Germany and Switzerland has very strong diagnostic facilities. They make possible to identify cancer at an early stage. Doctors can say exactly after the diagnosis what methods are necessary to treat cancer in this case. Of course, there are general patterns of the treatment of certain organs and body systems affected by cancer cells (bone sarcoma is treated not as lymph cancer, and treatment of blood cancer differs from the treatment of brain tumors). Each cancer treatment is so effective because an individual program of cancer treatment is made for each patient.
Doctors in Germany and Switzerland pay a lot of attention to psychological state of the patient. Patients cannot have depression because it significantly reduces resistance to the disease. Cancer treatment is possible thanks to accurate diagnosis and modern methods of treatment. Successful work of oncologists in Germany and Switzerland confirm this fact.
